Lobo Elementary PTA Programs
Here is a brief description of the academic and art enrichment programs provided to all students at Lobo.
These programs are made available only through your generous support of PTA and are strictly funded with PTA dollars!
Volunteer opportunities are many, both in and out of the classroom. Please contact Autum Rossi at autumrossi@cox.net for details.
MUSIC & THE ARTS
Class Act Music Program in Association with the Pacific Symphony Orchestra
Class Act is a nationally recognized program with only 40 schools in all of Orange County participating. Our students are able to experience an entire year of amazing activities, starting with a prelude assembly which introduce a Composer and Pacific Symphony Musician of the Year. This musician comes to give grade level lessons on their instrument, the composer and music terminology. In the spring, our Multipurpose Room becomes a Concert Hall, when members of the Pacific Symphony Orchestra give a live performance! Our students also attend a concert at the Segerstrom Concert Hall in Costa Mesa to see and hear their Class Act musician perform with the power of the full orchestra. And finally, at the end of the year, our students perform.
Meet the Masters Art Enrichment
This is a very unique art program whereby the students not only learn about the "Masters", but also have an opportunity to interpret their understanding of that artists medium while being transported back in time. Meet the Masters gives Lobo students assemblies on 4 different artists from different periods as well as in-class art lessons.
Your child will:
1. Discover great masters and view their art respective to that artistic period
2. Imagine what it was like during these artists lifetime, and
3. Create his/her own work of art in the featured artist's medium
Primary Music - K-3
Lobo PTA funds music instruction for Kindergarten through 3rd grade. Last year PTA funds were matched through a grant to Capistrano Unified District. Unfortunately, this matching grant has been terminated due to the school district's fiscal crisis. This is an important program for our young students and one we will continue to fund, as long as your contributions allow us to. YOU CAN HELP CONTINUE programs like this through your PTA membership, voluntarily donations, and supporting PTA events throughout the year! This program is a weekly lesson by a certified music instructor. The students not only learn the basics, such as pitch and tempo but also graduate to learning to read music and understanding basic music theory.
Reflections Art Contest
At the beginning of every school year, the PTA sponsors its national arts recognition and achievement program, where the goal is participation, not winning. Whether your child is a budding artist, author or film director, or just likes to dabble in the arts - this is a great way to jump start a love of the arts! Upon participating, your child's art is then displayed in the Lobo campus Multipurpose Room in the "Reflections Gallery". This years theme is: "Beauty Is...".
ASSEMBLIES & PROGRAMS Red Ribbon Week -
In October, Red Ribbon Week is recognized and kicked off the a parade on Avenida Del Mar in downtown San Clemente. During school hours, children take a vow to "Say No to Drugs." Last year Clarence Lobo Elementary was the proud recipient of First Place Prize for interpreting this theme as was displayed on each classroom door! Let's do it again this year!!!
Wolf Week - Literacy Program
In March (March 8-12, 2010), Wolf Week is celebrated here at Lobo and across the nation. One of our most anticipated assemblies of the year features the Imagination Machine. This assembly brings in a group of performs which choose from stories written and submitted bu our own Lobo students. At the assembly, they will perform several of the stories to the surprise of the chosen students. What an incredible experience - to see that story written and then interpreted blossoms into a brilliant piece of performance art.
Reading Olympics
This program is relatively new and we are so pleased with the outcome! One of our 5th graders voluntarily read over 13,000 minutes! This is an opportunity to encourage reading utilizing a "reading log" system where the students have an opportunity to track their reading minutes monthly in an effort to obtain a bronze, silver, or gold medal which is given at the year end awards assembly. Please remember to hand in logs every month!
OTHER PTA SPONSORED PROGRAMS AND EVENTS
Walk to School Week
Exercise, fresh air and overall fun - that's what Walk to School Week is all about! When students walk to school and stop at a PTA post, they will receive a Walk to School Spirit Charm to put on their backpack.
Take My Hand Assembly - Disabilities Awareness
During our awareness program, our students learn valuable lessions about the everyday challenges and accomplishments experienced by those with a learning or physical disability. In addition to an assembly, students then rotate through a series of stations designed to simulate a disability and promote understanding and empathy for others. In the past, students have experienced a guide dog stations, sign language stations, wheelchair mobility and trust walk - just to name a few!
Scholastic Book Fair - Winter Fair - December 1-3
The PTA brings in the Scholastic Book Fair to offer books to all our students during school hours. This past year, "Teacher Picks" allowed students and parents to purchase books that their teacher had recommended. Although this is partly a fundraiser, the most important benefit is to offer books in all price ranges and all reading levels to our students.
Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week
In May, our PTA and Boosters create a special week for both our teachers and staff. While most of the week revolves around the children showing their appreciation for their teacher, parents also have an opportunity to show their appreciation as well through notes and voluntary participation in a year-end class gift.
